Open Text, provider of Enterprise Content Management solutions, will acquire Captaris, Inc., specialist for the automation of document-centric business processes for approximately US$131 million. The acquisition process will be closed by the end of the year. With this acquisition Open Text enhances its solution portfolio particularly for Invoice Management based on SAP and Oracle systems. Captaris also offers solutions business information and delivery built on Microsoft .NET technology which support important content flow aspects such as integration, processing and automation. Open Text already supports 46,000 customer worldwide to manage and benefit from their business content. It seeks to strenghten its ECM offering with Captaris' technology and assures to continue the acquired product portfolio. This acquisition provides Open Text with another inroad to Fortune 100 and Global 2000 companies. According to Captaris about 23,000 customers use its fax solution "RightFax" (automated fax distribution). The original driver behind Open Text's move maybe that Captaris itself had acquired German-based OcÚ Document Technologies (ODT) at the beginning of this year. The technology of the former subsidiary of the OcÚ Group in the areas of document capture, text recognition and document classification is world leading and will strenghten Open Text's value proposition to customers. Captaris explains this move to be its best strategic option providing maximum value to its shareholders and relies on the financial strength of Open Text to take its products and services to the next level of evolution. For Open Text this acquisition not only provides opportunities but also challenges: along with "normal" issues of integration, it has to deal with the large and fragmented customer base of RightFax for which it has to maintain and develop the solution and provide support for it.
