Online resources help me in two particular aspects: continuous education and keeping organised. I am serving clients in different industries and with different mandates at any given time. Keeping informed about new research and best practice, as well as ensuring I am directing the correct resources to the correct projects and deadlines is the difference between failure and success.

  • Udemy: A variety of well-made online courses which I can access and study at my own pace. Udemy allows me to search for particular areas of expertise as and when I am in a position to pursue the chosen subject.

  • Feedly: It has been mentioned before, let that be testament to what a versatile tool it is. I follow numerous online journals and blogs, as well as keyword searches for content. I can add notes, tags, and "save for later", as well as sync with other tools I use for easy sharing.

  • Insightly: I am a fan of the free, and the Insightly free version has what I need. Combining customer relationship management (CRM), a task manager, opportunity tracker and project management tool, Insightly keeps me organised and manages connections between people and projects so I am never uninformed.

  • Drive: Cloud access is important to me, for simplicity of movement and back up. Google Drive works as both a repository of files and an active workstation. It also will sync with my address book and task tools so files can easily be shared and backed up.

For fun:

  • Podcasts! I listen to podcasts assiduously both for work and play. I have the app on my phone and use iTunes on my laptop. Topics include general news, startups and business management, food and wine, history, trivia and language, and several of the newer true crime podcasts.

An article in Jinfo which I found particularly interesting:

  • One thing I have always admired about Jinfo is the attention given to strategy (in addition to practice and resources). In "Strategic planning - value depends on context", Robin Neidorf explains how a conversation with your organisation is required for strategic positioning. She includes a practice guide to identifying your organisation’s goals, discussing them in the correct context and then aligning the goals and work of the information services department to match.
