A needs analysis is an often-essential step for developing solutions to complex challenges. When you need to take into consideration the needs of diverse stakeholders or users, select from a number of different not-quite-comparable systems, and collaborate with many parts of your business, a foundation in a needs analysis can make the difference between a successful project and an ongoing headache.
The most common error we see is for information managers to jump straight into gathering user feedback without first developing context for what you need from users and how best to get it.
Use this worksheet, the information provided in the article "Have You Identified Your Need for Commodity Content?", and the greater detail in the recorded webinar, "Needs Analysis for Commodity Content", to plan the phases of a needs assessment.
The extra time you take to plan properly will pay off in better inputs from users, better determination of the criteria by which you will evaluate options, and realistic expectations all around for the project at hand.
