A key focus for information centres in many organisations is the provision of news and current awareness. The accuracy and veracity of news are increasingly being questioned in a "post-truth" world in which objective facts are considered less important in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. In keeping with this theme, Jinfo recently attended an SLA Europe meeting which looked at, among other factors, the role technology plays in enabling the potential manipulation of the news and this article looks at some of the issues raised as well as offering some tips on what both information professionals and end-users can do to avoid being deceived.

Systems for curating and delivering current awareness have come a long way with the advent of social media. Whilst RSS and more traditional methods of searching still have their place, curation platforms that use the "wisdom of the crowd" are a valuable addition in extracting and aggregating fresh information whatever the topic. This article looks at emerging sources of information for current awareness, how social media aggregators bring value to your current awareness service, and how sustainable and reliable the technology is.
Just as the amount of information available to us increases, the number of tools to manage and navigate this information has also rapidly increased. More and more people are turning to free web-based tools such as Google Scholar for research discovery or Google Alerts for current awareness. Open source and commercial tools have also continued to evolve. Many now offer varying degrees of automation and machine learning that helps us make sense of the masses of information and data now available to us at work and this article explores some of these issues.
